Buying a Home

Choosing a neighbourhood

There are many factors to consider when selecting a neighbourhood that is right for you. These are just a few. Think of others and write them on your requirements list so they are not forgotten.

Scout the neighborhood

You live in more than just your house. Talk to people who live in the area. Drive through the neighbourhood at different times of the day, during the week and on weekends. Look carefully at how well other homes in the area are being maintained. Are they painted? Are the yards well cared for? Are parked cars in good condition?

Neighbourhood factors to consider:

  • Consider how the location will influence your day-to-day life. For example, drive from the area to your place of work. Will it be a positive experience? Is it convenient?
  • Is the neighbourhood near parks, recreation centers, shopping, theaters restaurants, public transportation or schools?
  • Listen for noise created by commercial areas, roads, railways, public areas, schools, etc.
  • Check with local civic, police, fire, and school officials to find additional information about the area that you may require.
  • Pay attention to commercial and agricultural areas as they can affect the environments smell and pollution levels.
